#1 Sunday Sales of Alchoholic Beverages
Appearing on the ballot at elections this year is if alcohol should be allowed to be sold on Sundays. This has been an issue in the area for quite a while. If passed there will be a $250 fee for getting the license to permit the sale. It also will only be sold from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Permission to sell beer or wine with meals will be determined on a voting precinct by precinct basis. What do you think- should alcohol be sold on Sundays or not?
#2 Absentee and Early Voting
Do you think that people should be allowed to vote away from “home”. For example, should a Garrett County resident be allowed to vote in Baltimore if they aren’t at home. This also would allow you to vote up to two weeks early if you were going out of town or something. Should this be allowed or not?
#3 Legalize Slot Machines
Slot machines should be permitted in Maryland. If passed machines would be permitted in Anne Arundel, Cecil, Worcester, and Allegany Counties, and Baltimore City. If allowed the money will be used to raising revenue for education of children in public schools, prekindergarten through grade 12, public school construction and improvements, and construction of capital projects at community colleges and higher education institutions. Should gaming like this be allowed?

I don't think it should matter whether or not alcohol should not be sold on Sundays. If I had to choose a yes or no arguement I would say no because alcohol is sold from Monday through Saturday so Sunday is only one day left out because of church services and other possible reasons like just a day off for Sunday. If people want alcohol for Sunday dinner, they should buy it before Sunday. Also, I think there should be absentee and early voting because it is more convenient for those who have to travel for work or have an emergency so if they miss a vote, they should be able to send their vote in later on a make-up day or at the first chance they get. Also, no, we should not legalize gambling in Garrett County. I do not think that the money gained from voting would really go to builing and improving schools because the local government would find some other use that they would agree the money to be better for. I don't believe the money would truely be used for school use. Also, gambling is not Christian like. People get addicted to gambling and waste their money on the machines when they could use it for a better purpose like providing a nicer home for their children and buying healthier foods.
1.) Altough I am not old enough to drink alcohol, I think it is a good idea to have Sunday sales of alcohol. Tourists in Garrett County come for attraction and excitement. On weekends, they might want to go out with their families or with their friends. If it is Sunday, people cannot purchase any type of alcohol. This does not make many people happy becuase a lot of people want to drink, even if not in excess, to have fun with their friends and family.
2.) I think absentee and early voting should be permitted in the state of Maryland. I think our state should permit this because it would raise percentage of people voting. For example, if a citizen is going to be out of state on the day of the election, that prohibits them from casting a vote. Therefore, that is one less vote for their party's candidate. Also, if a citizen was out of their county, they could cast a vote, checking a box on the ballot stating which county they were from. Thay way, the vote would be tallied in with the county's vote for a total party vote of that county. Although I cannot vote in this upcoming election, I will be eligible in the next election. Thus making it more conveniant for already registered voters and new voters.
3.) I don not think that slot machines should be legalized in Maryland. Although this would bring more tourists and more money to attractions, most places are supposed to be family oriented. Bringing in slot machines would also carry with it gambling and drinking. For families vacationing at these areas, this could ruin their trip. Instead of slot machines, we should have an alternative like family oriented activities. This would not only bring in more money, but more people because of it's family motivated atmosphere.
I think Sunday sales of alcohol should be legalized in Maryland because it would increase the amount of people that go out to eat on Sundays or the amount of customers that stores get during Sunday. Without selling alcohol on Sunday it was suppose to prevent the amount of accidents drivers have. People still find a way to buy alcohol by driving either to WV or another state. Accidents from alcohol will always happen on Sundays with or without the law. If the law was passed it would attract more people to Garrett County and make tourist and local people happier.
I believe that alcohol should not be sold on sundays. It has always been that way in Garrett County and it should stay that way. Also there are six other days in the week that alcohol is sold, so people who want to drink on sundays can buy it in advance. It also gives many stores a day off and the owners and employees time to go to church and/or relax.
I also believe that absentee voting should be allowed, but early voting should not. I believe that absentee voting should be allowed because people who are sick, on vacation, or out of the area in general can vote. This would mean that more peole would get to vote. I do not believe that early voting should be allowed because people should wait for election day or if they don't want to wait in line they can play hookie and wait for absentee voting. I would be more likely vote if I knew there was more than one time to vote.
I also think that slot machines should not be legaized. They may have benefits towards the community by donating funds towards schools but if you stop and think about it, the community is paying for the improvements, and lining the pockets of the people who own the slot machines at the same time. Also the idea of gambling is immoral and wrong. That is why I think and my parents think that slot machines should not be legalized
I think that people should be able to vote away from home. I feel that there would be many more votes from each state if we could have absentee voting and early voting. Many people that are in college do not live at home and absentee and early voting would make it easier to vote. There are plenty of people that would vote but maybe they are away from home on Election Day or can not make it to the poll to vote, so the early voting would help them that way they could vote before they left. This is why I think there should be absentee and early voting.
1) Alcohol should be sold in Garrett County on Sundays. Alcohol is sold Monday through Saturday so what is the big deal if it’s sold on Sunday. I understand Sunday is a day of peace and gathering with families for church services but many people like enjoying a refreshing spirit on a day like Sunday. If passed this would increase the amount of tourist staying in Garrett County. More tourists staying in Garrett County will boost and increase the population which in fact is a good thing Yes you could buy alcohol the night before or go to a different County to purchase alcohol but who wants all the hassle just to enjoy a spirit on Sunday. Selling alcohol on Sunday will increase spending in Garrett County and therefore will help the economy by selling and purchasing alcohol seven days a week. Although I am under the legal age to buy alcohol I believe alcohol should be sold on Sunday. When I reach twenty-one I would enjoy a delightful spirit on a peaceful occasion.
2) Legalizing slot machines in Several Counties in Maryland is the right thing to do. This will increase spending in Maryland and will boost the population. These areas are places like Allegany County and Baltimore County. Tourist and families visiting these places will enjoy playing slot machines and putting their money to the test. Some money will be donated. In my point of view this is not a big deal as long as the slot machines are in legal areas. I believe slot machines should be placed in adult surroundings.
I think slot machines should be legilized in Garrett County. If people above the age of 18 want to gamble they should be able too. I don't think other people should be in control of what we do with our money cause they are not the ones who earn it. I also think that the money should go to other things before they are used for something such as putting in slot machines. Such as if the money is needed for education purposes it should go to that before and then use the left over for neccesites. People have the right to spend their money as they want and to decide how much they want to spend of it. Although if more people are forced into poverty because of gambling then they should take them out.
1) I believe that Sunday sales of alcohol should be approved. The responsible drinking of alcohol is a personal decision--as is the choice to drink on the Christian sabbath day. While Sunday is my sabbath day, it may not be for others. From an economic development standpoint, the local impact would be positive. The approval of this referendam is very timely given the downturn in the economy.
2) Citizens should be able to vote early and through absentee ballots for elections. With today's mobile society, it is outdated to not make the voting process more accessible to citizens. As long as results are not released prior to the regular poles being closed, I see no harm in making this available.
3) Quite frankly I am torn on this issue. I do believe that gambling has brought negative implications to places where it has been legalized. Many of us, including myself, will travel on occasion to gamble a little. So in some ways I feel like a hipocrite, however, those addicted to gambling can bring negative influences. At the same time, I know that we will have some very difficult funding years ahead, without this change. Therefore, at this time I am undecided on the issue.
1. It is my opionion that alcohol should not be sold on Sundays. I believe that we make it to easy for people to get alcohol and that this feeds the problem of alcoholism in this country. I further beleive that not selling alcohol one day a week would give people time to dry out and maybe spend some quality time with their families.
2. I believe that we should allow absentee and early voting in the Garrett County, Maryland. This comes from my personal history with voting. When my first son was born if I had not been allowed to vote early in the state of West Virginia I would not have been able to vote due to being in labor for my son. The constitution gives every American the right to take part in our political process and if there are valid reason why a person can not be present a polling place on the day of an election then he/she should have the ability to participate in some form.
3. State of Maryland should not allow the use of slot machines. We have lived in other states that have passed similar gambling issues and education rarely sees any money from them. Furthermore, this leads to the destruction of many families because people become addicted to these machines with the hope of easy money and their families suffer in the long term as they use the family fund to support their habit.
I have been on the fence regarding alcohol sales. Previously, I voted for Sunday sales. This election I will be changing my vote to no. Having sober patrons at restaurants on Sunday is not a bad thing. During the summer months with vacationers, the days of the week begin to blur. Having one day a week for residents to be able to dine out without excess alcohol consumption is a good thing.
The wording of this bill is too vague. I am sure bars and restaurants definition of meals will be blurred and patrons will drink to excess. People will hopefully be less likely to drink and drive, and boat and drive.
I think the limited sale of alcohol on Sundays should be allowed in Garrett County. Garrett County sees a great influx of tourists on weekends, and to be able to enjoy an adult beverage responsibly with dinner on Sunday at a restaurant in this area is appropriate. A sizeable portion of most dinner tabs in fact consists of drinks consumed- ask any of the many who wait tables in the area. And most people (including me!) tip on the total bill. Tourists coming into the area learn quickly to buy before they get here or travel into West Virginia, losing further revenue for the local area. If the consumption of alcohol on Sunday is objectionable to someone, iced tea is still on the menu. Legislating that morality is a slippery slope.
The use of absentee balloting is perfectly appropriate if proper controls are exercised to prevent abuse. This allows people who are travelling on election day, or who are temporarily relocated from their polling place, to still participate in the process. I was able to vote in my first Presidential election (in 1980, truth be told, when I voted for a former actor- and no, we didn't write with charcoal on a slate!) while away at college using this process. The controversy rests in policing the process- one voter, one vote! Appropriate identification should be shown to obtain the ballot, and only from the place of registration.
Gambling in some form or another has helped to finance many local charities, organizations, and even church events. Raffles, 50/50 drawings, even Bingo are all clearly games of chance were a wager is made and "many enter, few win". Nevertheless, these venues with rare exceptions appear to do no harm. I've also seen rows of slot machines in Las Vegas, and Reno, and even in some so-called "Indian Nation" towns in Illinois and Michigan, where people happily drop in their coins. Some of the little old ladies I've seen should have arms like Poppeye from pulling the lever. Legalized slot machines, however, to me seem to prey on the base desire to get something for nothing. The opportunity for exploiting people well beyond the limits of their "discretionary income" is very real, and unlike a vice like alcohol, it is almost impossible to detect overconsumption. It conjures up images of "Potterville", if you get the "It's a Wonderful Life" reference, with a wide open, predatory bent. As much as I don't want higher taxes, if we need schools or other infrastructure, I think it's more appropriate to pay taxes to build them. At least that way people would tend to pay according to their ability to pay, rather than taking the last quarter from someone addicted to the possibility that "this one will pay off". Wanna bet?
Just my two cents!
Personally, I think alcohol should be sold on Sundays. I don't see it as a big difference if it's sold every other day of the week. I know there have been times where myself or my friends have wanted to be able to go to the liquor store and buy a drink on a Sunday, but we could not. I agree with the people who mentioned tourists in Garrett County who may want to buy some alcohol on a weekend.
I think slot machines should be located in Maryland. It would raise money for the state. While this money may not be spent exclusively on schools or roads, it could still be used in a useful way. Just because the slot machines aren't here does not mean Maryland residents do not like or use them. They just travel to other places where slot machines are legal to enjoy them. That money could be better spent on Maryland itself.
I don't think alcohol should be sold on Sundays. People can buy it on another day if they want it. Sundays should be left as a day of rest for people. If they really want alcohol on a Sunday they can buy it somewhere else. I think absentee voting should be allowed. If I were on vacation with my family, I would still want to be able to vote. I think slot machines should be in Maryland. They provide entertainment for friends and families. If people want to gamble, they should be allowed. They will find other ways to do it, even if there are not slot machines anyway.
1. I think that Sunday sales of alcohol should be legalized in Maryland. In Garrett County, tourism is a big source of revenue. Many tourists that visit want to be able to enjoy a glass of wine or a beer with their meal at a restaurant on a Sunday evening. People in Maryland will simply go into West Virginia to purchase alcohol on Sunday, which is money the state of Maryland should have. When people purchase alcohol with their meal, a large portion of their bill is the cost of the alcohol, and people tip off of the total amount of their bill. With Sunday sales of alcohol, waiters and waitresses would earn even better tips. I would want to have the opportunity to earn as much money as possible while working. I believe that if a person does not believe in the sale of alcohol on Sundays, then they should just not participate in the purchase of it on that day.
2. I believe that absentee voting is a good thing to have in our country. It allows people who cannot get to their designated polling place on election day to vote else where or at an earlier date. I think it would lead to a higher voter turn out because elderly people or physically disabled people would have a greater chance to get out and vote. When I am way at college, I want to be able to vote without having to worry about getting home on election day. There would have to be a new system developed to prevent voter fraud, but overall I think absentee voting is worth it.
3. I do not believe that slot machines should be legalized in Mayland. I think that they are too easily abused by people who are barely making it by anyways. The people who most frequently gamble are often the ones who feel that they have nothing to lose and are trying to make it big through the slots. Although the money earned through their gambling would go to the state, I personally think that taxes are a much dafer method of gaining money as opposed to exposing the state to potential corruption.
I believe alcohol should be sold on Sundays becaiuse of the fact of tourist attractions. I work at a horse stables and out main business is tourists. I cannot count how many times I have been asked where the people can get alcohol, where the closest liquor store is in West Virginia, and is there any bars open on Sundays. People like to come up and party with friends and they do not want to have to run all the way to West Virginia to get alcohol. If Maryland would legalize the sale of alcohol on Sundays, it would bring alot more tourists in and would provide more income for local businesses to provide more part time jobs for us teenagers.
1.) Although I am not old enough to drink alcohol, I think it is a good idea to have Sunday sales of alcohol. Tourists in Garrett County come fore attraction and excitement. On weekends, they might want to go out with their families or with their friends. If it is Sunday, people cannot purchase any type of alcohol. This does not make many people happy because a lot of people want to drink a glass of wine with their dinner, though not in excess. People purchasing alcohol at dinner would not be abusing alcohol, simply having a drink at dinner. Maryland is also losing business to West Virginia because many of our tourists are going to West Virginian restaurants because of the ability to purchase an alcoholic beverage.
2.) I think absentee and early voting should be permitted in the state of Maryland. I think our state should permit this because it would raise percentage of people voting. For example, I remember one year during an election, my family was going to be out of town. If there had been early voting, my parents would have been able to cast a vote and been able to participate in the voting of our president. Even though I cannot vote in this upcoming election, when I am able to vote, I would want the opportunity to be able to vote in advance. Early voting and absentee voting helps the American total count of votes because citizens are able to cast a vote if they are not able to do it on the set date of the election.
3.) I do not think hat slot machines should be legalized in Maryland. Although this would bring more tourists and more money to attraction, most places are supposed to be family oriented. Bringing in slot machines would also carry with it gambling and drinking. For families vacationing at these areas, this could ruin their trip. Instead of slot machines, we should have an alternative like family oriented activities. This would not only bring in more money, but more people because of its family motivated atmosphere.
1. Although some people don’t agree with having alcohol on Sundays, I think it is a good idea. Some people are different they all don’t go to church and would like to have a nice dinner and have a drink or two. Some people will abuse that but their going to abuse it anyway. I don’t think it would make a big difference if they sell alcohol on Sundays. We can not control what people do.
2. I agree with absentee voting. This is America and everyone no matter where they are they should be able to vote. People today have long distance traveling jobs. That would not be fair if they wouldn’t get to vote, and everyone’s vote should count; their vote could help make a difference, the difference we might want. Although I can not vote in the next election coming up, I will be eligible for the next one; this would make it more convenient for me for and other citizens.
3. I do not agree with legalizing slot machines. Even though not all people have gambling problems, many do. Garrett County is a very small community, also not very rich. I think it could very well bring down the Garrett County economy, and we all know right now is not the time for that. In one case it could be a big help. For example, Rocky Gap could help improve Allegany sales. People go past it all the time. It is not an ideal place to go. They usually will come to Deep Creek. For some people slot machines are just for entertainment but others lose their whole lives over a slot machine. Why anyone would want to go completely bankrupt is over my head. Therefore, I strongly disagree with legalizing slot machines in Garrett County; I do not think it is a good addition to our town.
1.) I think alcohol should be legalized to be sold on Sundays. I work at a small convenience store that sells alcohol. There have been many times where tourists have came in and wanted to buy alcohol, but were denied the sales because it is illegal in Garrett County. I think that when tourists visit the lake and this county, they just want to relax and have fun. A lot of tourists want to buy alcohol to help them relax and have fun with their families while visiting the lake. Also, the local people would appreciate the sales of alcohol on Sundays too. Where I work, we sell the most alcohol on Saturdays. People come to buy all their alcohol so that they can have some for Sunday. While tourists, who come up to visit, don’t know that it is illegal in Garrett County, and they have to wait. Therefore, I think it would not be an extreme problem at all to legalize alcohol sales in Garrett County.
2.) It would be a great idea to have absentee and early voting. You could be going out of town during the Election Day, and still want to vote. So you could go to a voting both, fill in what state and county you are from, and then you would be satisfied because you still had the opportunity to vote in the election. Early voting would also be a benefit. I think that it would raise the percentage of people who vote. If you could vote early, I think more people would be interested in doing so because they would know that they could get it done early, if they knew they could not on the regular day. I think this would be an extremely good idea.
3.) Slot machines would be a good idea to legalize in Maryland. The taxes and money they could raise could go to fund schools. Therefore, schools would have more money to make their schools better, fund more activities and sports. It could also bring more people into the state, which could raise more money to go towards money being made for schools. So, I think that putting slot machines in Maryland would be a nice idea and attract a lot of tourists.
